CYO Code of Ethics
CYO athletic competition is a means of training young people to enjoy healthful sports but in the end, win or lose, they learn to respect opponents, officials and spectators. It is important that all concerned with the CYO program follow this code.
1. To emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play.
2. To stress the values derived from being fair.
3. To show cordial courtesy to visiting opponents and officials.
4. To establish a happy relationship between visitors and hosts.
5. To achieve a thorough understanding and acceptance of the rules and standards of eligibility.
6. To encourage leadership, use of initiative and good judgment by the players.
7. To recognize that the purpose of competition is to promote the physical, mental, moral, social and emotional well-being of the players
8. To remember that a contest is only an activity and not a matter of life or death for player, coach, school, parish, officials and fans.
PLAYERS SHOULD:
-Know and demonstrate fundamentals of sportsmanship
-censure fellow players whose behavior is unbecoming
-respect the property of hosts and the authority of officials
-show respect for an injured player with removed from the contest
-not applaud error of opponemts or penalties inflicted on them
-not heckle, jeer or distract members of the opponents team
-never critisize fellow competitors or the coach for losing
-respect the judgement and strategy of the coach
-avoid profane language and obnoxious behavior
-demonstrate appropriate behavior before and after contest.
COACHES SHOULD:
-always set a good example for others to follow
-teach the value of honest effort in conforming to the spirit as well as the letter of the rules
-instruct players in their sportsmanship responsibilities
-discipline those players who display unsportsmanlike behavior/remove those who flaunt disciplinary action.
-be a perfect host to opponents and treat them as guests.
-provide opportunities for social interraction among coaches and players
-respect the official's judgement and interpretation of the rules and lead by example to the players.
-help players recognize the dangers of drug and alcohol use.
ADMINISTRATORS SHOULD:
-Reinforce all the responsibilities of the various coaches and take disciplinary action where a coach oversteps the bounds of decency.
PARENTS AND FANS SHOULD:
-be courteous to players, coaches and all fans
-cheer a good play by an opponent
-remain silent when an opponent is penalized
-serve as a role model for the players
-respect the property of your facility and that of your opponent
OFFICIALS SHOULD:
-be in control of the contest from the start
-use good judgement at all times
-refrain in engaging in arguments with players or coaches
-call coaches and captains together when an incident is forming, advising what steps will be taken to avlid it
-refrain from gestures that could incite coaches or spectators and conduct themselves in a professional manner.
